Do you remember what the Hip Hop blogs were filled with 6-7 months ago? You couldn't look anywhere without seeing a promo, ad, behind the scenes video or interview for the French Montana debut album Excuse My French. The Bad Boy machine was in full spin and as folk danced to a questionable remix of the classic "Freaks" a glaring issue was being over looked. Would the substance of the album live up the hype. That is the case with most releases these days. What makes it important to look back at this project was the following statement made by Mr Montana himself.
"I feel like it’s going to be a classic. I feel like it’s going to be the best album to come out in a decade… It just is. I heard everybody’s album. I’m a fan of everybody, and I just don’t feel like nobody came out with an album like this."
– French Montana
Now there's nothing wrong with a certain level of self confidence but let's also display some common sense. Be realistic with what you are offering the people. Package and market an album as well as you can but NO ONE thinks French Montana is that good an artist. Can he turn out a song that drunk club goers can move to? Of course, especially when following Puffy’s sampling model to the key but to make such claims tells me that artists are truly drinking their own kool-aid and/or are very delusional.
As of late June the record has moved 94K copes with 56k sold in the first two weeks back in mid may. And as for as content goes the highlight of the album is a track now featuring Miley Cyrus. Best album of the Decade? You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that actually knows any lyrics off that album. Clearly the consumers didn't appreciate their intelligence being insulted. Hopefully those promo expenses can be written off because that money should have been on ghost writers.
