A famous quote by Plato says“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." A fitting quote to describe Young Truth, a refreshing, dynamic and exciting hip hop artist that does not rely on themes dominated by sex, drugs and violence, but by the dust of everyday life. Known as “YT “ to her friends Young Truth, an emerging rapper says she got her love and passion for music from her father Chris, a popular DJ whose dream was to share his music with people all around the world. His dream was cut short at the age of thirty-five, as a result of heart failure and chronic diabetes.
Although she was six years old at the time, Young Truth remembers his unconditional love for God, family and music. It inspired her to begin writing songs at the age of ten and has since been sharing her love of music and family to all in her path. Recently she opened at Cloud 9 in Indianapolis for Grammy award winner, singer and record producer Kandi Burruss of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and the Platinum-selling musical group Xscape. However, she says it was her performance last year honoring military youth, families and veterans in the documentary “In the Name of the Children,” which gave her a tremendous amount of joy and satisfaction.
The 22 year-oldLouisville based hip-hop artist enjoys rapping about the value of family and the importance of striving toward a better day. Inspired by rappers like Tupac, MC Lyte, Bow Wow, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khlida and J. Cole. Young Truth says it was the encouragement of Young Jeezy that further motivated her to continue pursuing her music. An impromptu performance for him outside the Lennox Mall in Atlanta, Georgia led to some vital critiques and his personal cell phone number. Truth says “I’m working on finishing my CD and plan to contact him once the project is complete.” She regularly travels the I-65 corridor between Louisville and Indianapolis, working with promoter Rafael Stigall and R&B singer D. Goldy.
Truth has always chronicled her family’s struggle with adversity through her rap music. Her journey has taken her to Columbia, Tennessee; Indianapolis, Indiana; Louisville, Kentucky and Atlanta, Georgia. Through it all she has endured the loss of her father, her grandfather Bobby to lung cancer, her uncle Tony and cousin Duane in a tragic plane crash, and her six year-old cousin Akyis who passed away while undergoing surgery for a brain aneurism. She recalls the strength and courage of her mother Jill, a recovering drug user dealing with depression, living in homes without electricity or plumbing, and separation from her children. Young Truth tells her fans that her music is a constant reminder of life’s challenges and the value of family. Her mother no longer uses drugs and now manages her career, and has reunited Truth with her siblings Donesha, Andrea, Sister in law Charohnda; brothers Remus and Chris.
