The Hines-Lee Opera Ensemble Annual Gala (HLOE) is set for November 6, 2011 at 4.00 p.m. This year, the highly anticipated event will be presented at the beautiful THEARC (Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus) located at 1901 Mississippi Ave., S.E.Washington, D. C. Respected Howard University voice professor, soprano Charlotte Wesley Holloman will be honored by the organization for her tireless contributions to the arena of opera and exposure of countless budding musicians to the joys of classical music.
Holloman was awarded a grant from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation for study and concert appearances in Europe which led to study with master teachers and coaches in New York, London, Berlin and Milan, and continuous contracts with the German Opera. Her concert debuts in New York and London brought extraordinary acclaim. The New York Times reported a "vocal range and facility nothing short of phenomenal", and the Times of London headlined its review "a rare Strauss voice." Among other performances, Holloman created major operatic characters in more than thirteen operas in Germany, Switzerland and France with distinction and praise.

Renowned soloists, the soprano Marquita Lister, an internationally acclaimed opera singer, the accomplished tenor Duane Moody of “Three Mo’ Tenors and soprano Louise Toppin, a celebrated lyric coloratura soprano and professor of voice will be featured as the guest artists. A Washington, D.C. native, Ms. Lister has sung in some of the worlds’s leading opera houses and concert halls. Having just finished a highly heralded concert performance of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess this summer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the revered Tanglewood Festival and headlining as soloist in the opening gala concert in Philadelphia at the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc. convention, Ms. Lister continues to perform to rave reviews.
Tenor Duane Moody is also a native of Washington, D. C. Mr. Moody began his studies in the public schools and furthered his education at The Peabody Conservatory of Music of Johns Hopkins University and Boston University. His recital debut occurred in October ‘97, in The Terrace Theatre of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Shortly thereafter, he he joined the Mike Malone production of Black Nativity which was also performed at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater. In 2001 Mr. Moody received The Outstanding Emerging Artist Award in Music from the D.C. Commission of the Arts and Humanities. Moody performed nationally and internationally as a member of the acclaimed Three Mo’ Tenors.
The soprano, Louise Toppin was a finalist in the Munich International Competition and winner of the Metropolitan Opera regional auditions. She has performed in recital, opera and oratorio internationally and in the great U.S. concert halls and venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Merkin Hall. Dr. Toppin is a graduate University of Michigan, Peabody Conservatory and the University of North Carolina. Toppin teachers and coaches include the gala’s honoree, Charlotte Holloman, Reri Grist, George Shirley, Sylvia Olden Lee and Mattiwilda Dobbs.
Accompanists for the gala will be Mr. Willliam Jones and Dr. Marva Cooper.
