Over 3,500 bicyclists from the across the Midwest will be heading to southern Indiana this weekend for the 46th Annual Hilly Hundred Weekend. Over the the 2 days of and 100 miles of bicycling, riders will master over 9,000 feet of climbing on the hills southern Indiana in the peak of fall color.
The Hilly Hundred Weekend is sponsored by the Central Indiana Bicycling Association (CIBA). CIBA is one of the largest and most active bicycle clubs in the United States. You can learn more about CIBA on their web site, http://www.cibaride.org. Some CIBA members and families have been volunteering for the Hilly Hundred since the early 70’s, and CIBA membership is the source of the majority of the 400 volunteers who make the event possible
The Hilly Hundred Weekend has its headquarters at the Edgewood High School complex in Ellettsville, Indiana (about an 1 ¼ hours from downtown Indianapolis and about 7 miles west of Bloomington, IN). The two days of bicycling are along lightly travel roads of Green County and include many miles in the Morgan Monroe State Forest. Riders enjoy multiple snack stops and a lunch stop Saturday and Sunday, with each stop featuring live musical entertainment.
At the Edgewood High School, participants will also find a 20,000 square foot vendor tent packed with deals on bicycle gear, and can enjoy a live entertainment show on Saturday night. Riders can also sign-up optional meals (Saturday and Sunday breakfast, Saturday dinner) provided on the school grounds, and many participants will take advantage of sleeping bag space, camping and shower trucks on the school grounds, while others will use nearby hotels and motels, often booked the prior year!
While any healthy rider with a working bicycle can complete the event, proper preparation through regular riding in the weeks leading up to the Hilly Hundred is recommended. Riders should also be ready for the wide range in fall temperatures. Indianapolis based Bicycle Garage Indy has a Hilly Hundred resource page with tips on riding and gear.
Pre-registration by mail is available through October 4 (postmark), and online registration continues through October 14. Onsite event registration is $70 per person. Meals and sleeping bag space is limited. Proceeds of Hilly Hundred Weekend fund CIBA operations, the CIBA Foundation and Bicycle Indiana.
