Hillsborough County cold weather shelters open

With the cold temperatures forcast this weekend, Hillsborough County cold weather shelters are open for the homeless, and those who do not have adequate heat in their homes.

The shelters will be open in the afternoons on Saturday, February 16 and on Sunday, February 17, according to officials. It is reported that this will be the fourth and fifth time that the cold weather shelters have opened this winter season.

The shelter locations are as follows:
1. Brandon Community Center: 510 E. Sadie St. in Bandon. Phone: 813-635-8179
•This shelter opens at 5:30 p.m. and is for homeless individuals and families with children in the Brandon Area.

2. Metropolitan Minsitries: 2010 N. Florida Ave. in Tampa. Phone: 813-209-1077
•This shelter opens at 4 p.m. and is for families.

3. Salvation Army: 1514 N. Florida Avenue. in Tampa. Phone: 813-221-4440
•This shelter opens at 4 p.m. and is only for adults.

4. Jackson Springs Recreation Center: 8620 Jackson Springs Road in Town 'N Country. Phone: 813-554-5064
•This shelter opens at 6:30 p.m. and is for adults and families.

5. Wimauma Community Center: 5705 Hillsborough St. in Wamauma. Phone: 813-635-3500
•This shelter opens at 6 p.m. and is for adults and families.

Officials say that most shelters will be closing the following morning around 7 a.m. For anyone wishing to donate supplies, please contact each individual shelter. Donations of non-perishable items for Metropolitan Ministries please call 813-209-1000.
