For the first time since she was implicated in the Operation Fast and Furious (or Project Gunwalker) scandal, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton faced questions concerning the issue during a House committee hearing today.
According to an article published in The Hill, the Secretary of State was asked about the scandal during a meeting of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Congressman Connie Mack, R-Florida, asked Clinton about her knowledge of Gunwalker:
Appearing before the House Foreign Affairs committee, Clinton was questioned by Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.) about the State Department’s involvement in the controversial Fast and Furious operation that has triggered hearings on Capitol Hill.
Mack asked Clinton if State had issued “the Justice Department a license or a written waiver in order to allow for the transfer of thousands of weapons across the U.S.-Mexico border?”
The secretary testified that State had “no record of any request for coordination. We have no record of any kind of notice or heads up.”
“My recollection is that I heard about it from the press,” Clinton added.
The answer is reminiscent of what Attorney-General Eric Holder told a Congressional committee in May in answer to a question as to when he knew of the Fast and Furious scandal. Holder stated that he had only been informed about it a couple of weeks prior to the meeting.
But the record says otherwise. Evidence presented in documents and in internal emails now made public indicate that Holder was fully in the loop on Gunwalker at least as far back as July of 2010.
Clinton's statement also runs counter to the evidence presented on October 10, 2011, indicating that the Secretary of State was not only a key figure in laying the groundwork for what would become Fast and Furious but was one of the masterminds behind the entire scheme.
That evidence indicates that Hillary's top associates at State--Andrew Shapiro and James Steinberg--had devised a framework for presenting evidence to prove the false assertion that '90% of the guns used by the Mexican drug cartels come from the United States.'
The source of this information further asserts that it was Shapiro who laid out the broad details of the Gunwalker scheme in a private meeting in Hillary's office early in 2009.
