Hilary and Mike "have mutually decided [upon] an amicable separation," a rep for Hilary confirmed to PEOPLE Magazine on January 10. "They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time."
Hilary, 26, and Mike, 33, first began dating in 2007 and became engaged in 2010. They wed on August, 14, 2010, and welcomed their first child, son Luca Cruz Comrie, on March 20, 2012.
"There was no major incident – no big event between the two of them. They really did drift apart," a source tells PEOPLE. "They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time. They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends."
In fact, the two were spotted enjoying what appeared to be a romantic park date just this week. According to E! News, Hilary and Mike were spotted together in Los Angeles where they seemed to be in a good place. At one point during the outing, Mike was even seen presenting Hilary with a giant leaf, which she accepted with a huge smile.
The PEOPLE source continued on, claiming that the decision to separate was in no way "rash."
"It's something [Hilary] thought through," the source explains. "She really does care about him and he really does care about her."
