Hiking in Ojai one has ample choices of trails from which to choose. A local favorite and small-dog friendly hike many recommend is commonly referred to as Shelf Road. The moderate trail is about 3.6 miles round trip and is a gradual incline perfect for an array of humans and their four-legged companions.
The trail starts at N. Signal Street and goes through to Gridley Road. Most people park at one end (it really matters not which end) and when you get to the other side you simply turn around a go back. The trail is on-leash, but many locals let their dogs off-leash while always being respectful of other dogs and their humans by holding them or leashing them when appropriately passing one another. Remember take your pup off-leash at your own risk; if there is any doubt about your dog’s temperament please leash him. It’s better to err on the side caution.
Shelf Road round trip takes between 60 to 90 minutes depending on your personal pace. Additionally, the hike offers some scenic and beautiful vistas of Ojai orchards. The trail can be hot during peak times and seasons so it’s advisable to hike early or late during the warms months and carry water for both you and your canine. The hike is not overly crowded with people like many of the more popular climbs in Los Angeles. The quietness of the hike is welcoming because it really allows one to be with his pooches and the great outdoors.
Snakes, coyotes and other wildlife have been spotted on the trail so please be cautious and exercise some good common sense.
