Hiking in Phoenix? Popular Camelback Mt trail to close

Many snowbirds head to the warm climate of Phoenix to escape the north’s winter cold. The area is also a great short get-away for many. Golf is king there, but the hiking is also very good. A very popular place is the Camelback Mountain terrain. The peak lies to the east of downtown and actually does look like the back of a camel.

If you are heading down, be advised that a favorite trail will be closed until very late summer – the Echo Mountain trail will be rebuilt. It was put together about 50 years ago and the steep grade near the beginning of the trek comprises steps made from railroad ties. The wood has deteriorated to the point that hiking is not safe. A new route will be constructed with switchbacks rather than steps to reach the upper areas.

Another aspect of the project will be to double the number of parking places. Parking has long been a source of complaints by hikers. The site is near a residential area and parking is not permitted there. Finally, permanent restrooms will be added to replace portable toilets.

If you plan a trip to Phoenix you may want to keep up with the effort incase they finish early. Their website has all the details.
