If you are looking for a nice place for a hike, mountain bike ride or place to take a brisk trail run close to Colorado Springs, Red Rock Canyon Open Space may be just the place. Nestled in the foothills of Pikes Peak, this park has it all. Trails, rocks, a dog park and a place for the kids to play. Visitors will enjoy spectacular views of Garden of the Gods Park, Pikes Peak and beautiful red rocky canyon walls.
To get to the park, take Cimarron Street west towards the mountains. Just west of 31st Street, turn south onto Ridge Road and look for the parking lot. Proceed towards the trail head by walking east to the opening of the canyon. Let the kids play in the playground or take your pet on the dog loop at the base of the trail system. More serious visitors can head into the hills with mountain bikes or running shoes on several miles of trails, including loops on the mesa, through the canyon, past a rock quarry or near a pond.
Red Rock Canyon Open Space has trails for all skill levels, from easy to advanced. Consult the trail map to find the right set of trails for your skill and physical condition. Climbing is also allowed on the steep rocky canyon walls, however technical climbers must first register. Climbing over ten feet high on the rocks is prohibited for recreational climbers and my result in a $500 fine.
Red Rock Canyon Open Space is a beautiful place where outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds are able to spend the entire day exercising and site seeing.
