Hiking and camping 101: essential gear for hiking

An insulating layer can make a big difference when on the mountain.

When hiking in the Colorado backcountry, whether it's for a few hours or a few days, there are a few essentials that should be in everyone's pack.

Water:  Always bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.  Hydration systems such as the MSR Cloudliner work well.

Food:  Maintain energy throughout the day with snacks, energy bars, or full-on meals for overnight camping.

Rain Gear:  Protection from the weather, especially those Colorado afternoon thunderstorms.

Map/Compass:  For navigating trails or going cxross-country.

First Aid Kit:  Can be some simple band-aids and any personal medications or inhalers one needs.

Insulating Layers:  For staying warm if the temperature changes.

Sun Protection:  Wearing a sun hat and sunscreen to block those UV rays, and sunglasses to protect the eyes.

Having some simple pieces of gear in the pack can make a big difference when on the trail.
