Hikers head for the Travel & Adventure show

This weekend, January 25 & 26, 2014, thousands of hikers and other adventure travelers will descend on the Travel & Adventure show at the Santa Clara (CA) Convention Center. Over the two days, visitors will have the opportunity to find out about outstanding destinations around the world, talk with hundreds of exhibitors, and attend informative seminars given by travel experts. The show is open to the public on Saturday, January 25th, from 10:00 am-5:00 pm and Sunday, January 26th from 11:00 am-4:00 pm.

Speakers: Speakers and presenters include PBS travel expert Rick Steves, Travel Channel’s Samantha Brown, “Trip Flip” host Bert Kreischer, travel writers Patricia Schultz and Lee Foster.

Activities: Opportunities to try a rock climbing wall, zip line, or Segways. Watch a dance performance and meet the Fresno Zoo’s exotic animal ambassadors.

The Santa Clara Convention Center is at 5001 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, CA 95054. Parking at the convention center is free.

1. Family Hike on Mangini Ranch, Sat, January 25, 9am – 11am, led by David Ogden. Save Mount Diablo's 208-acre property includes the headwaters of Galindo Creek with rolling grasslands, oaks, buckeyes, and a rare desert olive grove. Visit a secret spring and keep your eyes out for bobcats and coyotes looking for breakfast, plus burrowing owls, quail, and many other feathered friends. This is a two hour, four mile hike with one strenuous climb.

Meet at SMD’s Mangini Ranch. From Ygnacio Valley Rd head south on Crystyl Ranch Dr. in Concord. We’ll meet at the hiker gate on Crystyl Ranch Dr. between Autumn Oak Cir and Rolling Woods Way.

2. Walking Tour of the Pittsburg Projects: James Donlon Extension and the Montreux project, Sat, January 25, 9:30am – 1:30pm. Led by Seth Adams & Juan Pablo Galvan of Save Mount Diablo This is a rare opportunity to visit the spectacular Wayne Thomas Ranch near Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Pittsburg, a moderate 3.5 to 4.5 mile walking tour, taking 3-4 hours. The Ranch would be destroyed by the proposed 1.7 mile James Donlon Extension (aka the Buchanan Bypass), which would extend from Somersville Road and one Seeno development project, to Kirker Pass Road and the currently proposed Seeno Montreux project.

Meet at Thomas Home Ranch, 5755 Nortonville Rd near Kirker Pass, a half mile south of Pittsburg. Directions: Headed northeast on Kirker Pass, turn right onto Nortonville Road. A quarter mile further, right into first gate, toward a big red barn and a little green house.

For either hike bring water and light snack, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, comfortable walking shoes (hiking shoes or boots are best, camera, jacket and layered clothing. Bug repellent (though bugs are not expected to be a nuisance).
