A woman who allegedly fell 1,000 feet while hiking in the French/Spanish Pyrenees mountain range died, and was eaten by Griffon vultures within 40 minutes of her death according to a May 6 report by the New York Daily News.
The report says that a 52-year-old woman fell to her death, and before authorities could recover her body, Griffon vultures had picked her bones clean. The New York Daily News reports that rescuers only found bones, clothing, and shoes where the victim once rested.
Investigators say do not believe the birds killed the woman, but only ate her remains in the moments following her death.
Since the devoured remains were discovered, locals began campaigning to have the population of Griffon vultures reduced in the area around the Pyrenees mountain range.
Griffon vultures have an overall body length around 43” (110cm), and weight about 12 pounds (5.3kg). They are known to eat the carcasses of large mammals.
The Pyrenees mountain range is a natural border between France and Spain.
