Hike through El Yunque calls for contouring leg treatment

After a post-plane workout in the Marriott San Juan fitness room while watching Anderson Cooper’s daytime talk show (and learning all about how to save with coupons), and after the next morning's hike through the El Yunque rain forest -- with extended hike to La Mina Waterfalls, it seems fitting to indulge in a Contouring Leg Treatment at Ocean Club Spa. The spa is tucked within the fitness center in the San Juan Resort & Stellaris Casino at the Marriott.

Ava, who performs the treatment, says this is a popular pick for travelers who spend their days exploring the area and beyond, like Old San Juan, for instance.

She begins with an exfoliation on each leg, followed by Moor mud (also known as therapeutic peat moss) warmed and painted on. This black mud is used not only to beautify, but also as a cure of a multitude of ailments, including mobility problems, arthritis and hormonal imbalance, as well as post surgery recovery and muscle recovery. It has anti-aging properties and is a natural antibiotic. Plus, it will reduce swelling from a plan ride. It’s good stuff, so don’t be afraid to get muddy.

Just when you start to feel chilly, a sensation you wouldn’t expect while in Puerto Rico any day of the year, Ava wraps your legs with plastic wrap, towels and a blanket for 15-20 minutes while you relax, eyes covered with a lavender spritzed facecloth. The brochure is correct in describing this treatment as “Spa-tacular,” especially when Ava begins to perform a short scalp massage, which is unexpected, but welcomed. Once the wrap is unwound, you’ll head to the ladies room for a quick shower to remove the mud, and then it’s back on the table for the reflexology portion of the treatment. Deep breaths in and out are beneficial to this treatment, and Ava leads the way with her own breathing.

Alas, you are done, but have just experienced an hour-and-a-half of improved circulation and moisture in legs that you can now show off in that cute little dress you’ve been saving for a tropical vacation dinner.

Contouring Leg Treatment: $95 for 50 minutes. With reflexology: add $79 for a half hour. For an appointment, call 787-289-6023.
