Hike for Discovery (changed to now fall under Team in Training), is a great way to get outdoors with a group and all for a good cause.
By joining the team and raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS); you receive a training program with weekly hikes to get you ready for the big day, fundraising tips, and clinics to help you learn all you need to know about hiking.
Once you reach your fundraising and training goals, LLS will arrange and pay for your airfare, hotel stay and event registration. The fundraising goal for the Grand Canyon adventure is $5,600. I've done fundraising for these kinds of things before, and it sounds like a lot, but with preparation can be accomplished.
This particular adventure will be to the Grand Canyon, Havasupai June 3-7, 2010. This part of the canyon is known for it's travertine pools of turqoise blue water.
Local hiker and Hike for Discovery veteran, Sheryl Wilkeson is excited about participating again. For her it has been a great experience. She even got to meet a researcher who received funds from her fundraising. It was "all a great connection seeing where the money was going and for very helpful research". She also loved going on an adventure with a group of people who all had the same goal in mind - raising money for LLS and enjoying life with a great hike!
An information meeting will be held Saturday, January 30 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Church of the Good Shepherd, 7834 Tennyson St Ne. If you have questions, you can contact the staff at 505-872-0141.
