Visit St. Joseph, Michigan this summer and take a guided tour of the art and archtechteure that is found around town. Have you ever wondered who flew an airplane over Silver Beach before the Wright brothers went airborne at Kitty Hawk or which Richard Hunt sculpture welcomes boaters to Port St. Joseph? Visitors can learn the answers to these questions and other fascinating facts about this lakeside community’s rich history and art culture each Friday through August 29. The guided, one-hour tours begin at 1 p.m. from the St. Joseph Today Welcome Center, 301 State St.
“The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center and Krasl Art Center alternate tours each Friday,” said Christina Arseneau, museum director for the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. “Plus, on August 29 both a history tour will be offered at 1 p.m. and an art tour at 2 p.m. It’s a very walkable community, so wear comfortable shoes and come learn more about St. Joseph’s fascinating past and love of the arts.” Come and learn the names of the women depicted in the Maids of the Mist Fountain and even what the steamship passengers once pay to ride the moving staircase up the bluff.
The Sidewalk Art Tour focuses on the city’s downtown monuments and sculptures created by world-renowned and local practicing artists. Tours will be held June 27; July 11 and 25; and Aug. 8, 22 and 29. The Sidewalk Heritage Tour features landmarks such as the former St. Joseph Savings and Loan Bank, Whitcomb Hotel, Maids of the Mist Fountain, monuments, lighthouses, Silver Beach and several historic homes in this Victorian-era community.
Tours will be held July 18 and Aug. 1,15 and 29.
While both tours are free, a suggested donation of $5 will help support the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center and Krasl Art Center.
