Bristol, Tenn. and Bristol, Va., are bracing for some wintry weather. Fortunately, according to a Jan. 21 article on WCYB.com, the Virginia and Tennessee highway departments have plenty of salt to treat our area roadways this year. Did you know that both departments provide some high-tech ways for you to check on road conditions before you leave or along the way?

There are websites you can access before you leave. In Virginia, go to http://www.511virginia.org/ In Tennessee, go to http://www.tn511.com/ There are various helpful resources there to help you plan your travel year round.

If you are needing to access weather and highway conditions from your phone, just dial 511. You can also make a transfer to another state's phone system through the 511 number.

If you need assistance from the Virginia State Highway Patrol, dial #77. You can also use this number to report a dangerous driver or hazardous situation.

In Tennessee, if you need help from a state trooper, dial *THP (*847)

There are also apps that you can download from the websites above to have the weather information at the push of a button.
