Highs and lows of Project Runway's newspaper challenge

Project Runway, newspaper challenge
Carol Hannah's design: The real winner

There were many more highs than there were lows and especially in this challenge in which the designers were tasked with creating wearable outfits out of the Los Angeles Times.  The results were a stunning display of art, sculpture and fashion. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

The highs…
Some of those designs were just so creative.

Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious.

The designers that stood out were the usual suspects. Althea, Shirin and Carol all created intricate and innovative designs that just had a “wow” factor which some of the other designers lacked. Ra’mon’s origami-inspired dress was gorgeous as well but not on par with the above-mentioned three.

Logan and Christopher also created nice designs and to date, they have been fairly consistent in creating outfits that are good but nowhere near  being supercalifragilisticexpealidocious.

The lows…

Eva Longoria Parker guested as a judge and frankly, no one really noticed. It would have been more entertaining if Alex Trebek came on and performed the macarena in drag.

It had to happen. The claws came out and the catfight began with Nicolas hissing and meowing at the clueless recovering addict, Johnny. Granted, Johnny’s design was god-awful ugly— “it looks like a bunch of kindergartners did it,” Tim said in the workroom. But the nastiness was in the snickering, eye rolling, holier-than-thou put downs delivered so succinctly by cabbage patch kid, poseur punk Nicolas. Even worse was his public sabotage of Johnny in front of the judges.

Nicolas, can you wash that grease right out of your hair?

Again, Michael Kors is a no-show. What the heck? It’s so boring without his easy, breezy put-downs. Come back to me Michael Kors!!!

Did the judges get it right?
Yes, they were right to auf Johnny. His designs have been awful from episode one and mercifully, he was cut. May his creations rest in peace.

Again, the judges keep bypassing the really fantastic designs. Shirin’s dress was wearable sculpture and she really deserved to win the challenge. Bad move judges.

Did not agree with the choice to select Irina’s coat as the winning design. It looked like a school paper-mache project and was really not as outstanding as Shirin’s or Althea’s.
