Chyi-Dean Shu, a student at Beckam High School, in Irvine, was selected as one of six winners to receive photography training in Ethiopia by world's acclaimed photographer and humanitarian, Reza.
Shu, along with many others, responded to the invitation of the Unicef and the World Photography Organisation (WPO) to submit a photograph highlighting one of the five fundamental rights of children: the right of survival, the right of education, the right of health, the right of protection from harm, abuse and exploitation, and the right to be heard.
Shu's entry highlighted every child's right to health with a photograph he took while volunteering at a health care clinic for under privileged children in Mexico. The 16 year old explains: "The area I live in is relatively safe and affluent so I've viewed every opportunity for community service as not only a chance to help others but also a chance to explore a wider spectrum of the world."
The other five winners are Rachita Castelino (15) of New Zealand, Ioana Velescu (17) of Romania, Imane Tirich (18) of Morocco, Mariya Maximenko (16) of Israel, and Giuliane Bertaglia Correia (15) of Brazil.
The six will be presented awards at the Sony World Photography Awards in Cannes, Frances, tomorrow, April 22. The contest marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
