High school student drowns during swim class: Teachers, students don't notice?

WENATCHEE, Washington (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) - A 14-year-old high school boy drowns while attending a swim class and his teachers and fellow students say they didn't notice?

It is difficult to understand how, when 14-year-old Antonio Reyes was attending a swim class with other students and teachers, no one would notice that he'd drowned during classtime.

That's what Wenatchee High School students and teachers told police after the incident Thursday.

According to a Wenatchee Police press release issued Thursday afternoon, police and emergency services personnel responded to the school at 10:53 a.m. that morning after a student was found unresponsive at the bottom of the High School swimming pool.

Reyes was taken to Central Washington Hospital but could not be revived. He had participated in a swim class with other students that was scheduled between 9:13 a.m. and 10:09 a.m.

Police investigators interviewed classmates and teachers and determined Reyes likely drowned while in class and that his classmates and teachers were likely unaware that this was occurring.

Reyes was found at 10:50 a.m. by students scheduled for the next scheduled swim class. Reyes was pulled out of the water and teachers performed CPR on Reyes until emergency services workers arrived on the scene and took over.

Wenatchee Police investigators do not believe foul play is an issue in this tragic drowning death.

The initial portion of the investigation into this incident has been completed by the Wenatchee Police Department, though there are still some follow up interviews that will be completed in the coming days.

An autopsy has also been scheduled by the Chelan County Coroner to determine the cause of death.

The Wenatchee School District released this press release earlier today:

An accident occurred at Wenatchee High School about at 10:45 this morning in the swimming pool area involving one student. Emergency services were called and the student was transported to Central Washington Hospital.

No other students were at risk or injured. The high school was put into lock down mode, which is normal procedure for urgent situations. The lock down was lifted at about 12:40 pm.

The high school will continue classes with an adjusted schedule for the day.
