ESPN 150 running back Alex Collins could not sign his letter of intent with the University of Arkansas on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, because it was stolen by his mother. Collins was at South Plantation High School in Florida and prepared to sign with Arkansas over Miami until his mom showed up and mucked up the works.
Andrea McDonald grab the paperwork and fled from the scene because she does not want Collins to leave home and attend school so far away. Since Collins is 18, he does not need a parent or guardian to co-sign his letter of intent.
He does need the letter though.
ESPN reported around 4:15 p.m. EST that McDonald was on the way back to the scene where her son was prepared to sign with Arkansas, and he still will do so.
Per NCAA rules though, Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema can't talk about Collins because he hasn't received a signed letter of intent. Bielema was on ESPNU's broadcast coverage of national signing day, but could say nothing about the recruit.
South Plantation athletic director Mike Collins, who is not related to Alex, said later Wednesday that "the family was not on the same page and needed to work things out."
It appears as if things have now been worked out, and Collins will soon sign his letter of intent to Arkansas. Collins is ranked 57th overall by ESPN, and verbally committed to Arkansas on Monday. He chose the Razorbacks over Miami, Florida, Florida State, and Wisconsin.
