Servite QB Cody Fajardo
There were 21 varsity football games played on Friday night in Orange County. The most notable however, took place on Thursday night at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.
Orange County’s No. 1 ranked team, Servite kicked off their season with a decisive win against CIF Southern Section No. 1 ranked Long Beach Poly with a 30-7 win. Thanks, in large part, to the awesome play of Servite’s QB, Cody Fajardo. The Servite senior completed his first 11 passes and lead the Friars in rushing yards with 43, including a rushing touchdown.
Notable games:
Sage Hill held on to upset Fairmont Prep with a season opening 28-26 win. Fairmont Prep is ranked No. 7 in the CIF Northeast Division. Sage, under new coach J.R. Tolver, has had a losing record in the past three straight seasons and ended with a 2-8 record last year.
Top ranked team, Tesoro suffered a home opener 10-13 loss to Mission Hills. The loss snapped an 11 game home winning streak for Tesoro, whose last home loss was against Esperanza in 2007. The Titans were looking for answers to a tough Mission Hills defense. It was bitter sweet for the Grizzlies, who may have lost starting QB, Aaron Hauser to a wrist injury during the game.
No mercy in Mission Viejo, as the Diablos shredded Morningside (Inglewood) 55-0. It was hard for Morningside to even get their game started with MVHS scoring on offense, defense and special teams inside the first three minutes. RB Exavier Edwards gave us a hint of some of his talents with two rushing touchdowns of 12 and 5 yards and carried the ball seven times for 42 yards.
