Sustainability is quickly becoming the focus of high-impact initiatives. High school students and university students are welcomed to attend the “Interdisciplinary Sustainability Student Summit” hosted by Cornell University Sustainability Design. The unique summit on sustainability is free, but registration is required and space is limited.
High school students welcomed alongside university students
It is not necessary to be a Cornell University student. Students from other colleges as well as high school students are welcome to attend. The group seeks to develop an intercollegiate discussion about sustainability issues.
New York location
The “Interdisciplinary Sustainability Student Summit” will be held at General Assembly, 902 Broadway in the Flatiron District, on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Peer mentorship sessions
The Cornell-hosted the “Interdisciplinary Sustainability Student Summit” will include:
- Panel Discussion on “Interdisciplinary Collaboration” – Students and professionals will discuss solving sustainability related issues, using case studies as discussion points.
- A poster session will showcase college and high school student efforts on entrepreneurship, green movements and action. Through peer mentorship sessions, attending high school students will obtain guidance on presentation skills. There will be a networking hour, giving students time to develop an action plan.
Workshops that move ideas forward to achievement
In addition, sessions and workshops offered at the “Interdisciplinary Sustainability Student Summit” include:
- Idea to Action: Getting Things Started and Keeping the Ball Rolling” – As students turn to entrepreneurship and start-ups after college, project management is becoming a necessary skill. This workshop will explore various attendees’ experiences initiating projects and sustaining long-term progress.
- “Sustainability on Campus: Campaign and Implementation” – Sustainability efforts on college and high school campuses come in many different forms, from environmental activism over political decisions to grassroots outreach initiatives with local communities to design-build contests for emerging technologies. Participants in this session will discuss how various organizations can partner to achieve a sustainable future.
- “Issue-based Education: The Power of Teaching Through Trial” – While the education system faces some of its greatest challenges, many turn to technology or alternative learning for answers. Students, professionals and educators will share their experiences. This session will highlight the variety of ways students can get involved and how to be prepared them for the workforce.
Unique, knowledge-based leadership development summit
The “Interdisciplinary Sustainability Student Summit” provides innovative opportunities for high school students and college students to interact in developing strong, informed discussions on sustainability. Students, not confined by artificial restraints of age and background, are coming together to discuss the future of sustainable innovation, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary education’s evolution, both in and out of the classroom.
Innovative, applied knowledge will be developed through an interdisciplinary, multiage approach that the Cornell University Sustainability Design group hopes are seeds of larger actions. Thought-provoking interactions are seeded that can be carried into achievements to support a sustainable future.
