On Sunday, Mason Dixon Roller Vixens hosted a mini tournament for fresh meat in Hagerstown, MD. A massive number of leagues sent skaters, including WFTDA powerhouses DC and Charm City, as well as Key City, Black Rose, and Reading, just to name a few.
Most of the skaters were fresh meat, and among these were a few definitely worth mentioning:
Evilyn Ivy, of Free State, showed an excellent track sense. She knew where her opposing jammer was without looking, and was able to engage in more than a bit of quality jammer-on-jammer action. Although she was not often lead jammer, her defensive jamming was excellent. She rarely conceded points, even without lead status.
Jeneral Kaos, also of Free State, showed how dangerous a quick & clever jammer can be. She was very difficult to make solid contact with; most blockers were only able to strike glancing blows. She was lead jammer more than 70% of the time, and often within just 3 or 4 seconds of the jam start whistle.
Samoan Tsunami, of Mason Dixon, looked to be the archetypal solid blocker, but played above and beyond her expectations. Besides being solid, she was fleet on her feet, as well as having an uncanny sense of where the opposing jammer is. Her blocking wasn't entirely body-checking, either. She was able to execute some amazing positional blocks.
Mason Dixon and Free State look well positioned with these fresh meat skaters on their roster. This should mean great things for them in the future!
