High Priest of Penance is one of the newest "Magic: The Gathering" cards revealed today from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert expansion set "Gatecrash."

Whenever High Priest of Penance is dealt damage, you may destroy target nonland permanent.

Abusing High Priest of Penance requires having him stick around for more than just one combat phase. A Ring of Xathrid or Skeletal Grimace will allow you to regenerate High Priest of Penance while also forcing your opponent into paying attention to it. In Modern, Darksteel Plate will make this Human Cleric indestructible.
High Priest of Penance allows an Orzhov player to gain valuable time while setting up their Exort creatures such as Basilica Guards, Crypt Ghast, and Treasury Guard. Against a fast Selesyna deck you'll be able to chump block Loxodon Smiter and then use High Priest of Penance to take out their Silverblade Paladin.
High Priest of Penance helps mitigate the damage done by an opponent's Mizzium Mortars or Bonfire of the Damned by taking out their best permanent.
If you've raised the toughness of High Priest of Penance, then cards that allow you to deal damage repetitively such as Pestilence will let you mow down your opponent's permanents.
