The 18th annual Green Race will be on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 12 noon. The Green Race information page lists the following details. “No doubt the single most famous, most respected, and most competitive creek race on the planet, the annual Green Race remains a fabulous and homespun little affair held each Fall on the steepest section of western North Carolina’s Green River Narrows. Local boaters train here much of the year due the reliable flows, and people come from literally around the world to compete.”
Ron Nelson of Untamed Science writes that The Green Race or the Green River Narrows Race is “The Most Extreme Kayak Race in the World.”
When he covered the race In 2011, Matthew Rond of CNN reported, “You’ve probably never heard of the race, but there’s no doubt you’d appreciate the action. The athletic skill and white-knuckled bravery possessed by Green River Narrows whitewater kayak racers can only be described as impressive.”
According to Mr. Rond, professional and expert whitewater kayakers of the highest caliber traveled from around the globe to participate in the event near Hendersonville, North Carolina.

The Green River flows through the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina. It is damned to for Lake Summit in Tuxedo, North Carolina. Tuxedo is an unincorporated community in Henderson County; near Flat Rock, home of Carl Sandburg, and Hendersonville.
Please remember when parking you must completely off the road and have all 4 tires on the right of the white line. In addition, it is illegal to drink alcohol within 50 feet of the river in Polk County. Please hike out all trash you bring into the gorge

This year the awards party will be on the recently finished deck and historic barn behind Thompson’s Store Ward’s Grill in downtown Saluda, NC. Come out for live music, beverages and the awards. There will also be a highlight reel of the race. Festivities will be 6pm-11pm.
