Multiple Sclerosis: Meet Dr. Terry Wahls

In an exclusive interview, Dr. Wahls talked with me about how and why she is using a Paleo version of the high fat low carb ketogenic diet for her multiple sclerosis. She has authored a book: "The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine."

When she developed MS, Dr. Wahls had been a vegetarian. However, she decided to explore the potential of a Paleo diet for managing her condition. She studied the work of Dr. Loren Cordain, a Paleo guru.

But her condition became worse. "I took the recommended chemotherapy; I got the tilt/recline wheelchair and even took Tysabri, but continued to slowly decline," she now says.

She then developed her own ketogenic diet approach, defined in her book. Dr. Wahls says it can be used as a "treatment for other neurological and psychiatric disorders including brain cancer, ALS, Parkinson’s, MS, dementia, bipolar, depression and schizophrenia."

Her Ketogenic Diet

To stay in nutritional ketosis, Dr. Wahls revealed her sample day:

  • I try to have 2 cups full fat coconut milk each day.
  • My goal is two servings green leaves, 2 servings sulfur rich, 2 servings color and 6 ounces of meat every day; fermented foods each day. I may have 1/2 to 1 cup berries with coconut milk.
  • I focus and eat non starchy vegetables, meat, coconut milk/ coconut oil, 1/2 cup berries.
  • a.m - green smoothie using coconut milk and fresh greens, lime juice; meat in the form of pickled herring, left over meat from evening before; or liver pate' morning
  • evening - huge salad or cooked greens with garlic and or mushrooms; in a skillet - meat and vegetables; coconut oil over the vegetables (e.g. peppers, cauliflower rice with garlic scape pesto)]
  • tea with coconut milk; glass of beet kvass (fermented beet juice) or fermented vegetables.

Dr. Wahls eats only twice a day. In ketosis, "the blood sugar is very stable - eating twice a day is very comfortable," she said.
