Fashion designer Prabal Gurung just announced his first beauty collaboration reported Allure on Friday. The luxury line of cosmetics is set to launch in November through M.A.C., and promises to be the makeup brand’s priciest yet.
Gurung is known for his lush collection of women’s wear, therefore it is no surprise his new makeup venture will epitomize extravagance. The fashion designer told WWD, "I design [apparel] at a luxury price point, and I wanted to make sure that the product that I came out with, particularly as this is my first foray into beauty, was in sync with my brand.” However, this seems a tad contradictory, as the high-end designer launched a collection of clothes for Target in 2013, which ironically cannot be found for sale online.
The gold “art-deco” packaging of the 35-year-old entrepreneur’s M.A.C. makeup exudes old Hollywood glamour with a somewhat vintage feel, which Prabal Gurung wanted to portray, “I wanted the packaging to be beautiful, so beautiful that when a woman takes it out of her purse, it becomes a topic of conversation." His mother’s compacts inspired the look of the new beauty line.
M.A.C. Cosmetics consumers could expect lavish colors such as a “majestic purple lip-gloss, cherry-red lipstick and a rich tawny bronzer,” along with the basic eye shadow duos, liners and a kabuki applicator. The report stated the line is so alluring that one could “just stare at it longingly on your vanity all winter long.” But priced at $20-$70, who could afford to ogle makeup, unless you have enough of a disposable income to throw away money to gaze at Prabal Gurung’s luxury beauty line.
