If you like chili, the mountains, Winter Park Resort, and all there is to do there in the summer you should check out the High Altitude Flamethrower’s Chili Festival, this weekend, Aug. 16-17. We can vouch for it from personal experience; it’s a great time and there’s a lot of great chili from which to choose, and there’s a lot of variety.
The festival will be held at the Village at Winter Park Resort, where you can sample three different categories of chili and determine who gets a spot in the World Championships held this year in Las Vegas.
Winners in three categories – Red Chili, Green (Verde) Chili and Salsa – will advance to the World Championships, while People’s Choice, Resort Employee, and Grand County Champion will also be named.
Chili tasting will be available from noon to 4 p.m. both days while the chili lasts. Tasting tickets go on sale at 11:30 a.m. and can be purchased for 50 cents per ticket. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Winter Park Ski Education Foundation – Spencer Nelson Memorial Fund.
If you’re in the contest, setup starts at 8 a.m. both days and cooks meet at 9. Preparation, cooking and judging proceed throughout the day. The People’s Choice sampling starts at noon with live music in The Village Gazebo with Hunker Down on Saturday and Moses Jones & the Smooth Expressions on Sunday.
ICS winners and Best of Employee will be announced on Saturday, and ICS winners and Best of Grand County Winner will be announced on Sunday.
