Manufacturers of prescription drugs are scamming the American public. Through direct-to-consumer marketing, the pharmaceutical industry convinces us that by taking their magic bullet we can fix our ailing bodies and that by taking their pill, we are absolved from having to take proper care of ourselves.
For example, a bypass surgery patient said to me not long ago during a conversation about eating foods that contain no cholesterol, "I take Lipitor (a cholesterol-lowering drug) so I can eat anything I want," and unfortunately, he's not the only one that thinks like that.
Medications should be used in combination with a healthy lifestyle, not as a substitute for one.
Some medications are, in fact, life savers. After all, where would we be without antibiotics or the drugs delivered by immunizations?
It is the maintenance drugs that reduce cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar that I have issue with. As people become more resistant to practicing healthy lifestyle habits, they become more reliant on these drugs and on higher doses of them.
For decades, we have known that a diet based on plant foods (e.g. vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains) and not on animal foods (e.g. chicken, beef, milk, and eggs) can reduce cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. But still, we depend on these toxic potions to fix what is wrong with our bodies instead of taking responsibility and doing what we should.

I have a lot of concerns about DTC advertising, too. I'd much rather the money go into research and development of innovative drugs than flashy commercials for yet another nasal spray, etc.
