Welcome to the latest installment of Hidden Vallejo - our ongoing series that highlights places in Vallejo that, in our estimation (and suggestions from our readers), deserve more of your attention.
You may already know that Mare Island Golf Course is is the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River. And you also may be familiar with the details of its fascinating and colorful history. Still it is possible that you may not know that the relatively recent addition of an outdoor deck, accessible from the Golf Club's Cafe, offers unparalleled views of San Pablo Bay and Mount Tamalpais...and on super-clear days - the Golden Gate Bridge. On days when cloud cover may shroud part of these views, there are also pleasing views of the first and ninth holes as well as the practice greens.
Ample seating can be found at tables where umbrellas are poised to offer shade from the sun. If you love dining outside, consider visiting this secluded spot. The Cafe opens for breakfast at 7am, serves a full lunch menu until 3pm and then kicks into happy hour mode. The restaurant also offers daily specials.
To get a preview of the deck, check out this posting's slide show. On one beautiful afternoon last year, we savored extraordinary views of the Bay while enjoying a beer and a tasty Island Burger.
