Chalk it up to human nature: What may seem 'hidden' to some folks is common knowledge to others. Such is the case with Moschetti Espresso - the focus of the second installment of our new series, Hidden Vallejo.
Where have you been all my life? That's how we reacted when we took the advice of a reader who suggested that we feature Moschetti in this series. She said that she had only recently heard about its uber-popular Saturday morning hangout. "I don't even drink coffee" she told us. "But the vibe is so upbeat and welcoming, I'm now a regular."
With this build-up in mind, on a gorgeous fall morning a couple of weeks ago, we headed out to Moschetti's. At the intersection of 6th St. and Curtola Boulevard we noticed a large parking lot full of cars and a constant stream of foot traffic between the lot and some buildings inset from the lot. As we came closer we felt the energy of a street festival. combined with a neighborhood block party.
Live music, clothing and food vendors, tables and chairs for hanging out....and free coffee. We're not talking about little dixie cups of java here.....We're talking about full sized cups with banks of brews to choose from and unlimited refills. And residing over all of this enjoyment is the 'Don' of this part of the Boulevard, Fabrice Moschetti.
The Moschetti brand is synonymous for top of the line Espresso Bars, Espresso Carts, self-contained Espresso Vehicles, and Espresso Machines. But we think it's fair to say that when Moschetti regulars congregate at these Saturday morning sessions, they may appreciate the apparatus but they love this man's warm and generous spirit.
During our impromptu visit Moschetti graciously sat down with us and shared his philosophy of doing business. Which sounds a lot like his philosophy for living life, period. A native of France, Moschetti says that he wanted to recreate the ambiance of his hometown, Nice, where folks could get together over a game of bocce ball, sip coffee, shoot the breeze and knosh on their favorite foods.
So from nine to noon every Saturday, rain or shine, folks-in-the-know (and they come from many parts outside of Vallejo) converge at this spot, virtually 'hidden from view' - but nourished by enthusiastic word-of-mouth and the energetic marketing efforts of Julie Voice, Moschetti's partner in conviviality.
While we can't reproduce the taste, we have fashioned, for this posting, an exclusive slide show and brief video to give you the gist of its flavor. You will have to drop by on Saturdays for the real thing.
BTW...You can also purchase Moschetti coffee on site.
