Hidden treasures off the 101: award winning wines at Mosby

Just two hours north of L.A., one minute off the 101 freeway, is a little known award-winning winery called Mosby whose tasting room awaits in an old carriage house.  Inside is the warmth that emanates from Gregg, the wine server there most days, who gives a decadent pour of five wines for $8 coupled with a mini stand-up routine.  Mosby specializes in Cal-Italian wines, a rare find on the Central Coast.  The Italian grape mixed with the coastal crops here results in bold reds, that rival the flavor and richness of the vino produced in Central and Northern Italy. Spanning the range of dry to fruity to deeply complex, Mosby’s wines are sure to complement the evening you have in mind.

My favorites are the Primitivo, a deep berry red, ideal for pairing with hearty meats or pasta. La Seduzione, a sensous, silky blend that lingers and Roc Michel, my choice to share during sunset at one of the many nearby beaches.  The true bargain is Lucca, described as a red table wine that rivals a fine Chianti.  This black cherry red woos a wide range of palates as the friends I recently shared a couple bottles with can attest.  For the lighter taste, Mosby presents a clean sparkling white, Stelline di Cortese, or little stars, similar to an Italian Proseco, that sends this winos mind to a long afternoon on a porch swing.  Don't forget Sofia, Mosby's dessert wine, a rich rasberry sensation that one can imagine pouring over ice cream for an extra special dinner party finale.

Mosby is that rare find that makes you feel like you're in on a secret.  Even the label art is something to behold, created by Robert Scherer, an Italian Artist who too was so inspired by Mosby's special blends, he created labels specific to the transcendence he felt while sipping them.  So next time you're traveling down the 101 freeway between the hours of 10am to 4pm, stop in at Mosby for a break.  Enjoy the surrounding vines and olive trees.  Then, stand at Mosby's counter and prepare to be seduced - no experience necessary.  Close your eyes, swirl the glass, taste and select your favorite. With most bottles in the $14 - $30 range, you’ll feel that you’ve been given the bargain of a lifetime when you leave with a bottle of each.

Mosby is located at 9496 Santa Rosa Rd.  To get there from 101 North, take the Santa Maria exit off the 101 freeway, two lefts, continue straight and you will end up at Mosby.  Show map of 9496 Santa Rosa Rd, Buellton, CA 93427

My three adult children planned a birthday get-away for me. They came in from Chicago and Ohio. We went to the Santa Barbara area for a long weekend of site seeing and wine-tasting. Mosby's was great. Gregg is a wonderful host. The labels designed by Robert Scherer are exquisite. Is there any way I can purchase some labels?
    Thanks,
    Johanna
