This was going to be an article about the Ashton Observatory. A family outing was planned, and the road to Ashton Park was taken. However, a wrong turn and a beautiful day pulled us away from stars and back to Earth.
The first surprise awaiting was caused by missing the turn. Instead of turning right where the road changes to gravel, we went straight. Over a hill was an old bridge, one worthy of taking pictures of. The kids peered over the side, fascinated by the rushing water, and tossed rocks in.
After a few minutes of investigating our first discovery, we headed back in the right direction to Ashton Park. The observatory was on the left hand side when we entered the park, yet our attention was drawn to the other side, where a nature trail was hiding.
Despite it being slightly muddy in sections, over all the nature trail was just the adventure all of us were seeking that day. The weather was perfect; not too hot or sticky with zero bugs to annoy, allowing us to fully take in the breathtaking scenery of trees and wildflowers. Rays of sunlight peeked through the trees, lighting a path of dirt and railroad ties.
Once our hike was complete, we briefly explored the rest of the park. What we found was a multitude of camping grounds hidden within the trees.
We could have visited the observatory that day, although we were happy enough with the natural artistry of the park itself. Another day, preferable in the summer, will have to be planned for stargazing in the evening.
Aston Park is located on Hwy 117, west of Baxter, off Hwy 330. Information about the observatory can be found at The Des Moines Astrological Society.
