Hickey goes to Islanders Tuesday

According to Katie Strang of ESPN, defenceman Thomas Hickey has been claimed off waivers by the New York Islanders from the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Hickey, a Calgary native, was the Los Angeles Kings' first round draft pick, fourth overall in the 2007 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

However, even though Hickey was a first round draft pick, and was on the Canadian blueline when Team Canada won the gold medal at the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championship in Pardubice, Czech Republic and then again at the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championship in Ottawa, he has yet to play a single game in the National Hockey League.

Hickey, who played his junior hockey with the Seattle Thunderbirds, has played the last five seasons with the Manchester Monarchs in the American Hockey League.

There is no word yet if Hickey will crack the Islanders' lineup this season or play in their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport. The Islanders start their season Saturday at home against the New Jersey Devils.
