Hialeah Park has paved the way for Casinos to open all over the State of Florida. Hialeah Race Park re-opened their doors after nearly a decade of it being closed to racing. On March 2009, it was announced that Park owner John Brunetti was awarded a racing permit. Design firm EwingCole was selected to develop a master plan for renovation and further development, including a new casino.
On May 7, 2009 the Florida legislature allowed Hialeah Park to operate slot machines and run Quarter Horse races. The Park reopened November, 2009, but only for Quarter Horse racing. Slots were installed, however other operators in the area sued Hialeah Park and the Park had to put its casino opening on hold.
A three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeals last year upheld the Florida legislatures ruling. That decision was then appealed to the Florida Supreme Court, which today, issued a page long ruling stating it was dismissing the case. Five out of the seven justices supported the order.
