Honey, the nectar of the gods, is one of the purest substances made in nature; golden in color, sweet in flavor and possessing some well-known and documented healing powers. Going back to almost 400 BC honey has been recognized as an antibacterial substance with the power to cure scrapes and cuts, reduce infections and heal ailments from the inside out.
With all the benefit of honey it’s one of the 4 food items your baby shouldn’t eat until at least they are one year old. Interesting, a botanical medicine at our fingertips and we can’t share it with our children. What is happening here?! Well, honey has the potential to carry the spore C. botulism, a fairly dangerous and potentially deadly, gastrointestinal infection that can seriously harm infants and children. It’s recommended to keep children away from honey until at least 2 years old.
A seriously dramatic issue with honey is its ability to be compromised. Because it’s a liquid substance it can be easily polluted. According to Food Safety News recently in the USA honey from China that has been banned in European markets for being impure, but is being smuggled into America and is filling our grocery shelves. This honey from China, India specifically and Asia in general is being tainted with illegal antibiotics and heavy metals and then is sold to the USA and its consumers. Diseases in the hives of China lead them to treat and kill the virus with chemicals from India, specifically the antibiotic chloramphenicol, which is seen to cause DNA damage in children. But the bees and hives keep producing honey, only now the honey contains this dangerous antibiotic. So China’s honeybees and hives are sick, they kill the germs with cheap “medicine” from India, which is unsafe for human consumption, and then the USA gets this altered honey and sells it to us, the consumers. So much for honey being pure!
Another problem is the labeling system in the USA. If you look at your honey label it may say “Packaged in Michigan”. This is misleading because packaged in Michigan does not mean the honey is from the USA, it might be toxic honey from China and put into bottles here in the US. They only way to be sure your honey is pure and chemical free is to buy organic honey made in the USA or other honey safe countries like Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina or Uruguay.
Read the labels on your products for the safest consumption of honey and other “pure” food items. While the USA is doing the best it can with keeping unsafe honey from China and Asia out of our stores, do your part too. Demand the food your family eats is safe and chemical free. Read labels and shop smart, because while honey may heal, bad honey may be harming you.
