Hi and Lois threaten to have salacious kitchen sex in front of their kids

In a move not likely seen elsewhere on the comics page, stodgy old Hi and Lois Flagston are giving serious consideration to having sex in front of their kids.

Bear witness (if you're not faint of heart) at yesterday's episode of the comic, in which the harried husband and wife begin the faint stirrings of what Hi calls a "coffee quickie" just as twins Dot and Ditto rush into the kitchen. To be sure, Hi tries to send the kids on their way, but isn't the damage already done?

After years of never expressing the slightest yearning for sexual satisfaction, Hi and Lois appear to have found their inner kink in recent months. Who can forget this oddball scene from August of last year in which Hi dresses up as some sleazy supermarket caballero and tries to get Lois to re-enact the lyrics from Rupert Holmes's "The Pina Colada Song"?

While the sex-in-front-of-the-kids element is somewhat disturbing, we have to applaud the Flagstons for having the nerve to actually admit they have carnal relations once in a while. When's the last time Dagwood and Blondie took a roll in the hay? Henry and Alice Mitchell? Mark and Cherry Trail (that one is complicated)? No, the only instance we can think of comics couples actually acting like couples are a couple of lascivious moments featuring Mary Jane and Peter Parker in "Spider-Man." Or the continuing congress between Beetle and Sgt, Snorkel in "Beetle Bailey."

So we're not upset with Hi and Lois. We just wish they'd get a room instead of making the kids watch.
