HGTV Dream Home 2014 tours generate income for worthy cause

When HGTV decided to build a dream home in the community of Schaffer's Mill outside Truckee, Calif., few would have guessed that there would be more than one winner in the $2 million plus sweepstakes event. But on March 10 the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported that the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation would be a winner too, thanks to a Schaffer's Mill donation of $51,000 from tours held at the new mountain home.

Schaffer's Mill donated exactly $51,047 of the proceeds raised from the Dream Home 2014 tour ticket sales. And they gave it all to a very worthy cause, as the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation essentially funds the Tahoe Forest Hospital, a not for profit rural health care facility.

That rural health care facility serves six rural counties (and two states), including Truckee, North Lake Tahoe, Donner Summit, and the Sierra Valley in California, as well as the Incline Village in Nevada. So the money will be put to great use, helping to provide primary services to a geographical area as large as 3,500 square miles, which includes the dream home site.

And since this particular hospital operates based upon a community effort started initially by the generous land donation from the Dick Joseph family, all philanthropy donations are greatly appreciated. And hopefully the winner of the new Dream Home in the Schaffer's Mill community will be open to future opportunities to help use their new dwelling for a fundraising effort again, as this time the home tours resulted in as many as 5,000 visitors to the community.

A decade ago a California woman won the 2004 HGTV Dream Home in St. Marys, Georgia, and Georgians hope that this year it will be a Georgia winner who will be able to claim the California dream home. After all, there is a lot of similarity between the pines of California and the pines of the Peach State. And the Schaffer's Mill community seems to embody the same sentiments of the South, as it is also a "four-season family community."

The Dream Home sweepstakes rules show that the sponsors representatives for the elaborate home giveaway were slated to contact the winner of this year's home between March 3-9, 2014. But the official announcement of the winner would not take place until 6 p.m. ET on April 15, during the HGTV Dream Home 2014 Special. So unless you saw Monica Pederson visit the new winner this week, you'll have to wait until tax day to learn who won the beautiful new home near Truckee, Calif.
