(Examiner) -- Twin brothers David and Jason Benham were set to host "Flip it Forward" on HGTV until the television network became aware of the Benham's extreme anti-gay views, among other controversial beliefs.
Right-Wing Watch first called attention to the conservative activism of David Benham on Tuesday. He is the son a prominent right-wing activist, Flip Benham, who among other things has reportedly blamed the Aurora shooting on Democrats and the September 11 attacks on abortion rights. Benham senior also serves as the director of Operation Save America, an organization that protests outside of abortion clinics.
The brothers were quoted saying "homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation" and "demonic ideologies" taking hold in colleges and public schools. Benham also discusses the fight for North Carolina's Amendment One, which involved a ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions in the state constitution. In 2012, one of the brothers even wrote a blog post equating opposition to same-sex marriage to the fight against the Nazi regime.
The twins responded to the news with the following statement "Anyone who suggests that we hate homosexuals or people of other faiths is either misinformed or lying."
Some are asking the network to reconsider their decision to cancel the show citing "tolerance works both ways". Anti-gay activists routinely claim they are the victims whenever they are no longer permitted to oppress others.
Overall, an overwhelming majority of viewers are applauding HGTV for their decision. The First Amendment to freedom of speech does not guarantee you a television show. It does however, allow a television network to decide what to air, and what not to air.
