Eve with LaTisha McFarthing, Andover YMCA Dance Coordinator
Dance in America has finally made a comeback. With the advent of shows such as Dancing With the Stars, America's Best Dance Crew, and So You Think You Can Dance, dance is once more en vogue. Dance has come out of the shadows of the Lawrence Welk era to the forefront of American culture. People under 40 can now look at the modern American dance scene as something they might want to join. Additionally, the Baby Boomer generation finds dance a fun addition to their active lifestyle, one that helps them stay energetic, flexible, and fit whilst giving them the opportunity to socialize. In Wichita, dance classes and studios are popping up everywhere, and old dance studios are seeing a new resurgence of interested students. Dance being a natural part of human expression since ancient times, this is a positive change in our local community away from the restrictive ideas sometimes found here that encumber it from growth. The choice of dance styles abounds, everything from swing, salsa, waltz, jazz, tap, ballet, bellydance, East Indian dance, to country line dances, and etc. The local YMCAs in Wichita and Andover offer classes at some of the best rates that can be found in the Wichita Metro area, for both members and non-members, even in these hard economic times. Classes available are for adults and children, and include everything from ballet and jazz for the kids, to bellydance and ballroom dance for the adults. For many of these teachers, pay is not the primary motivation. They work for the love of it; sharing their art with those who wish to learn is a joy, not a job. So check out the classes at your local studio or YMCA, and join the crowd!
