Reaching back to its original roots, as the Lancaster Caramel Co., Hershey is launching a new caramel crème candy called the Lancaster in U.S. and China. The caramel company was founder Milton Hershey’s initial business in 1886.
Caramel is one of the fastest growing segments in the food industry, far outpacing both chocolate and other sweet treats. Additionally the comfort food is one of the most popular among males and females in their twenties and early thirties; the perfect target demographic with high disposable income.
Candy consumption is at an all time high both in America and China; the number one and two markets respectively for sweet treats. Meanwhile, China has quietly become the largest consumer of U.S. based goods in the world.
Developed by Hershey’s Sweets and Refreshment department after two and a half years of research into consumer tastes and the global candy market, the Lancaster caramels debuts as the first new candy product offered by the Pennsylvania company in over 30 years, and represents a niche market that the organization calls “comforting richness”.
