The Lansingburgh Historical Society is sponsoring a "Porch Sale" at the Herman Melville House located on First Avenue and 114th Street in the Lansingburgh section of Troy, NY on Saturday, September 12.
The sale will be held inside and under cover from 9 am to 2 pm rain or shine.
Hundreds of antiques and collectables priced from 25 cents to $25 will include antique tools, kitchen and household items, local post cards, antique glass and china, collectable glass and china, soda, beer and medicine bottles, small furniture and a wooden mantelpiece. Modern gift items and perennial plants also will be for sale.
The family home is where Melville began his literary career after several years as a merchant sailor.
He had moved to Lansingburgh, now part of the City of Troy, in 1838 with his mother and five of his eight siblings after his father's death. He wrote poetry and various minor naval fiction stories while living there before moving to nearby Pittsfield, MA, where his career began blossoming and eventually resulted in the likes of "Billy Budd" and "Moby-Dick."
The Lansingburgh home is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Proceeds benefit the historic 1786 Herman Melville House restoration. Contact numbers are: 518-235-3501, 518-235-4041, 518-235-7647 or 518-272-1539.
