December has historically been a big month for movies and this year will be no different. Moviegoers will have no less than 8 films to pick from when Christmas 2014 arrives. According to a Dec. 9 report on Yahoo!, here’s what you can expect to see in theaters. Four of these films are big wide releases.
“47 Ronin" starring Keanu Reeves who has been sorely missed will finally open. It was originally scheduled for release Nov. 2012 and we wonder what the delay was all about. The plot is simple. Reeves as a samurai leads a band of 47 warriors to avenge the death of their master. While it’s been 10 years since Reeves headlined a film, the movie has a cheesy-looking CGI dragon that gives us cause for pause.
"The Wolf of Wall Street" is the fifth pairing of actor Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese. This time DiCaprio goes for it as wealthy socialite/crooked stockbroker Jordan Belfort. If you want a couple of hours of sex, drugs and wild parties, this is your film. The critic buzz is good. In spite of being nominated twice for best actor, DiCaprio has yet to nab an Oscar so who knows.
"Grudge Match” brings together two aging actors who once played great boxers in what else – a boxing rematch flick. Robert DeNiro of “Raging Bull” and Sylvester Stallone” from the “Rocky” franchise are squaring off in the ring to determine the top boxer. For comic relief at least we get Kevin Hart thrown in the mix.
"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is the project Ben Stiller has been working on for three years both as actor and director. It’s the story of shy guy, Walter, who lives in a world of daydreams and finally has his big adventure in real life. It is based on the book by James Thurber. Initial buzz isn’t good.
"August: Osage County" brings together two of the most talented actresses of our time, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. The story involves a group of women who are brought together because of a family crisis. Throw in some Ewan McGregor and you have the makings of a great film.
"Labor Day" stars Kate Winslet as a mom who unwittingly gives an escaped convict – Josh Brolin - a ride. Could be a real nail biter.
"Justin Bieber's Believe" is a follow up to 2011’s “Never Say Never" that will appeal to the teenager girl and Bieber fan alike.
"Walking With Dinosaurs 3D" offers to show us what the world looked like during the time of the dinosaurs. The trailer suggests it is a kid’s film and it might be right for the family.
