According to the New York Times, in a feature dated November 3, 2013, a fact many people who study natural medicine have known for years has been proven. Herbal supplements, a five billion dollar-a-year industry, is a rip-off. You can read this startling article here and once you calm down, enjoy a cup of "real" herbal tea.
Why do people have the urge to pay ridiculous amounts of money per year on the fake herbal supplements? The easy answer may be laziness. From the viewpoint of the companies who produce this "snake oil," they have studied at the marketing school of P.T. Barnum, who once intoned "there is a sucker born every minute" and from a sales point-of-view, you want to hook that "sucker."
Herbs are indeed an important part of natural health and should be an integral part of your diet. Herbs, real herbs! Not some schlock sold in a capsule. The best and purely logical way to give your body the herbs you need for good health is simple: grow your own!
Anyone can grow herbs and you can basically grow herbs any time of the year. All you will need are some seeds or starting plants. You can buy non-GMO seeds from many nurseries or on-line establishments. You can buy starter plants for a myriad of herbs at Lowes, Home Depot or other such stores. In the case of many herbs, seasons don't really matter. If you live in an area which has rather harsh falls and winters, grow the herbs on a windowsill that gets at least a few hours of sun a day. If you live in a warmer fall and winter climate, the deck or patio can virtually be turned into a herb garden.
As you will read in this story from the New York Times, buying herbal supplements is basically the same thing as throwing your money away. Take some of that money and invest it in yourself, grow an herb garden and enjoy the health benefits only Mother Nature can deliver.
