According to Traciy Curry-Reyes, the movie is based on a man named Jim Bennett and his wife Patsy Bennett. The true story happened in Georgia in the 1980's. The real woman committed suicide in an apartment in California in 1988 while her husband Jim was working in construction.
According to Reyes' research the true story is a lot different than the movie version. Reyes, researched the real case after she was contacted by a mental health group, who wanted to research the multiple personality disorder case further. It is now commonly referred to as dissociative identity disorder.
