Rock star, writer, and world traveler Henry Rollins will speak at the Oak Park Public Library (OPPL), located at 834 Lake Street inCity: Oak Park, at 7:00 p.m. on October 18, 2011 top promote his new book Occupants: Photographs and Writings. This event is co-sponsored by The Book Table and the Oak Park Public Library. It is free and open to the public.
According to The Book Table, “The book pairs Rollins’s visceral full-color photographs, taken in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Kyrgystan, Mali, Nepal, North Korea, Northern Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Siberia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and elsewhere over the last few years, with writings that not only provide context and magnify the impact of the images, but lift them to the level of political commentary. Simply put, this book is a visual testimony of anger, suffering, and resilience that will help its readers realize what is so easy to miss when tragedy and terror become numbing, constant forces—the quieter, stronger forces of healing, solidarity, faith, and even joy.”
In 1981, Henry Rollins joined the Southern California punk band Black Flag as vocalist. When the band broke up, he formed the Rollins Band and the record company and publishing house 2.12.61 to release his spoken word albums. He has averaged over 100 shows a year for over 30 years.
Rollins also works as a DJ on two different radio stations in California, the now defunct Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles, and KCRW, a public radio station in Santa Monica. He worked as a TV show host with The Henry Rollins Show (2006-07) on the Independent Film Channel (IFC), and an actor on TV (Sons of Anarchy) and in such movies as Heat (1995), Lost Highway (1997) and The New Guy (2002). His work as a voice actor includes the dreadful animated TV series Batman Beyond and the direct-to-video animated film Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. He played Duke in the hilarious “Ballad of G.I. Joe” music video on FunnyorDie.com.
