Helping children learn to read helps seniors maintain brain function

Along with aging can come the fear of losing memories and other mental functions.  Not everyone will suffer from memory loss.  Studies show that 1 in 3 people will go through their 70’s and 80’s with no apparent loss of mental capabilities.  However, that leaves another 2/3 that will suffer memory loss, to one degree or another.

There are ways to help in maintaining brain function as you age.  It can be as simple as walking or other forms of exercise.  Keeping the brain activly engaged is important.  Studies show that those involved with helping children learn to read, gain as much benefit as those who are involved in an exercise program.

During a study called Experience Corps Trial, older men and women volunteered to teach reading skills to kindergarten through third graders.  Brain imaging studies showed that after only a few months the volunteers experienced beneficial changes in their brains.  The changes were similar to those involved in research which focused on exercise and memory loss.

There are many ways for senior citizens to get involved within their communities, keeping their bodies and minds active. OASIS is a national education organization dedicated to enriching the lives of adults age 50 and older.  This is done through programs that focus on the arts, humanities, health, technology and volunteer service.

By taking classes through OASIS seniors have an opportunity to engage in mind building activities and exercise programs.  However, it does not stop there.  As a volunteer within the program, seniors can help children within their community learn to read, by doing so they help others while helping themselves.

This is interesting, because I've noted the older people who prefer to spend time with children, saying "it keeps them young" are also the ones who really do act younger. Great info!

That is an interesting observation. There is so much about the brain that we do not understand yet, it is an amazing piece of work!
