Helping a family member balance their cholesterol

1) Make sure that you keep your arteries clear by not smoking. Smoking cigarettes lowers your good cholesterol levels (HDL) and rises your bad cholesterol levels (LDL).
Learning how to quit smoking will help your health any many ways, including your cholesterol.

2) Make sure that you brew your coffee by using a filter. Studies show that non-filtered coffee has cholesterol increasing oils, and if not filtered, can raise all your cholesterol levels including the bad level (LDL).

3) While you are having that freshly brewed, filtered coffee... have a nice bowl of oatmeal. The soluble fiber that is in oatmeal cleans the artery walls like the little scrubbing brushes you see in those commercials. Eating a bowl of oatmeal also fills you up and lasts longer so you won't be munching on unhealthy snacks.

4) Eat more fish, but make sure they are fish that have cholesterol lowering omega-3 fatty acids. If you have two servings a week, then you should be fine. Some of the fish that contain those omega-3 fatty acids are: mackerel, trout, herring, albacore tuna and salmon... all are yummy!
Eating walnuts is another great cholesterol reducing item.

Didn't know that about coffee or the cigarettes. The oatmeal is better but I'd rather have the thick burger from Hardees

If we all ate the foods in the form GOD put them instead of making these into POPTARTS, we'd would probably not be writing about cholesterol levels;-)

Good ideas Richard, but sometimes at certain age levels through no fault of themselves levels will rise. Practical and common sense article, I like a lot, thanks! No smoking folks! There are at least 19 toxins in the tobacco today....did you know that people?
