Help with depression Bible-style IX, Happiness is possible

To help with our depression, the last thing we care about when we are first experiencing emotional pain is getting happy again. If you aren't quite ready for happiness, start this series from the beginning and take things at your own pace. There are many things in life that can zap the joy out of us, and we may not want to "feel" anything right away.

But if you are tired of feeling crappy, fed up with disillusionment, done with hiding yourself away from everyone…if you have started the healing process, and regained strength and hope, perhaps now you are willing to get at least a little happy again.

Finding help with depression Bible-style means discovering the promises that God has made in His word that will transform our minds and hearts when we have suffered emotional pain in its many forms. The psalmist, David, taught about God's faithfulness to us when our hearts are hurt.

Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. – Psalms 30:5b, NLT

You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy. – Psalms 30:11, NLT

We will have tears and mourning in the worst situations that life brings us, but God promises us that happiness will return to those in a right relationship with Him, and David wrote that Psalm before the Holy Spirit had been poured into all who believe in Jesus Christ.

The apostle Paul had much reason to get depressed with all the persecutions he had to endure as a missionary, but in the midst of it all he said, "I am filled with encouragement; I am overflowing with joy in the midst of all our suffering." (II Corinthians 7:4b, NET)

We began this series with an emphasis on prayer. We will end this series with an emphasis on prayer. God wants His people to cry out to Him with our needs. He wants to restore our minds to a place of joy. But sometimes, we just have to ask:

Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.
– Psalms 107:28-30, ESV

Get happy! Get glad! Get joy today. Trust God to calm the storm in your life and help with your depression and emotional pain. His ears are open to those who believe.

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. – Hebrews 4:16, NLT
